Friends,

Many of you have seen the posters in my studio over by the sofa. For over 25 years, I've been the Artistic Director of the "Fake Radio" comedy troupe. In that role I've had the honor of performing with and directing some of my idols. Next week, I've got a "dream come true" show that I want you to see. For one night only, I'll share the stage with one of my comedy and acting heroes: John Larroquette. John's a five-time Emmy Award winning actor who starred in the TV shows, "Night Court", "Boston Legal", "The Librarians", and movies like "Stripes".

So, join us next week on Friday, October 30th, for a pre-Halloween engagement as "Fake Radio" presents a loving parody of Lux Radio Theater's The Phantom of the Opera. As always, we'll adapt the original 1943 radio broadcast (vintage commercials and all) into a two-act performance. We'll be dressed to the nines, reading our scripts before the microphones, and - inevitably - going off-script because, duh: we all love improv as much as you, right?!

It's a special evening for me professionally, so I wanted to make it easier for the entire Change Through family to attend:

SAVE THE DATE!
Our student showcase will be on Sunday, November 8th
at 8pm at the 21Ten Theater.

Your teachers should already have mentioned this to you. While you are never forced to be on stage, we encourage all of you to try. It's not a "show" or "performance": it's a demonstration of what you've been learning. Natasha and David will be setting you up for success.

STOP TALKING ABOUT GROWTH.
START EXPERIENCING IT.

Some of you have already booked time with David for 1-on-1 Improv Training. As a working actor with over 30 years of on-stage and on-screen experience, he'll continue to offer this service, either in person or virtually.

What's new is that our studio is now extending our private 1:1 training menu to include business training and life coaching, either in person or virtually.

These 75-minute customized sessions get you on your feet to actively break through creative blocks, master executive presence, or navigate big transitions using applied improv and embodied practice.

David has now worked with individuals, families, business owners in transition, and others using applied improv techniques. The results are powerful and real: new promotions landed; difficult conversations successfully navigated; family dynamics improved; managing a challenging team made far easier, and more.

Each session begins with a 15 min strategy discussion. The next 60 min is for unscripted exercises, interactive role playing, and exploring how various approaches yield different results. The experience creates transformation you can understand intellectually and actually feel in your body.

Coaching for the Stage & Screen

If you've hit a wall with your improv/acting practice, I'll help you break through. In our one-on-one coaching sessions, we'll identify your blocks and then build the specific skills you need to move past them.

Personal & Life Coaching

If you're being challenged — in a relationship, a career, or in your own head — we're excited to help. Applied or "process" improvisation is an incredible tool that we use achieve personal breakthroughs, often in surprisingly powerful ways.

Business & Leadership Coaching

If you're a business leader who is closed off, confrontational, indecisive, or non-collaborative, these sessions will help you break through. In our one-on-one coaching sessions, we'll identify what's actually happening under pressure.

How Improv Boosts Divergent Thinking & Storytelling

Can a few rounds of unscripted play actually make us better thinkers and communicators? Researchers set out to test this by measuring how improvisational theater courses affect cognitive flexibility and our capacity to construct engaging narratives.

A 2021 study evaluated participants before and after engaging in improvisational theater. The findings revealed that training in improv pushes individuals to actively embrace uncertainty and step outside of standard frameworks. As a result, participants demonstrated a significant improvement in divergent thinking, which is the cognitive ability to generate creative, varied solutions to unexpected challenges, as well as enhanced coherence and structure in their storytelling.

David's Micro-Lesson

David explains why there is NO NEED AT ALL for an improviser to be accurate when improvising.

Parents, We're lucky here in Portland. We've got a variety of theater, acting, and improvisation camps for children all over the city. But there's a problem... None of them - except for us - are staffed by adults with decades of professional acting or theater experience. Our own child is attending a camp this week at The Judy. It's a lovely organization and facility and he's having a good time! But his camp is being supervised by teens on summer break and young adults with little professional...
